This art project is simple, easy and adorable…

Supplies:

Roll of toilet paper

Piece of fall material 20 x 18 in.

Brown paper bag cut in half

Brown yarn or hemp string

glue

fall silk leaves

First cut material 20 x 18 inches. Put toilet paper in center of material and bring material up to cover roll and stuff the edges in center of roll.  Cut brown paper bag in half long ways and roll up and glue edges together to make it stay. Wrap brown or green yarn around the bag to make stem. When yarn is wrapped completely around stem stuff in center of toilet paper. Proceed to glue as many silk leaves on top of pumpkin as you wish.

This is a quick and easy project you can make when time is scarce.  However, looks great as a center piece for your table.

Two Sides to Every Story

August 31, 2009

seal ohio 2

Two Sides to Every Story

Revisionist history unfortunately is all to common. Political correctness from generation to generation changes which creates the temptation of historical revisionism. One such case my children and I found while homeschooling is the story of the great seal of Ohio.  Let’s take a look at the first book we read.

Ohio Geography History Government Second Edition – Roberts, Moore, Leidich Copyright 1981  -  A group of people met one night to discuss state problems. Among them were William Creighton, the Ohio secretary of state; Thomas Worthington, then United States senator; and Governor Tiffin. They met at Worthington’s large log home, on a hilltop outside Chillicothe. One of the problems that was discussed was the question of a state seal. The discussion lasted all night. It was early morning when the people began to leave. As they stood outside, they saw the sun rising slowly from behind Mount Logan. Creighton thought that the scene would make a good design for the state seal. The others agreed.

Notice in the 1981 history book referencing the seal of Ohio the men were working all night discussing state problems, and to come up with a design for the seal of Ohio. Is that all that happened? Let’s now read from the second book.

OnePathway of Progress A Short History of Ohio – Bowman Copyright, 1943 –  of the first things the lawmakers took up was the matter of a design of the great seal of the state. The story of how one was selected has become a legend of the Scioto Valley, and it is probable that no other committee ever reached a decision with so little debate. The members  met one night in a cottage near the town, but postponed  their work to enjoy a card game. The game became so interesting that the committeemen forgot all about the great seal; but finally one member arose to stretch, and opened the door. He saw the sun rising above Mount Logan, “How about that for the state seal?” he asked. The others looked, agreed, and returned to the game.

In the 1943 version as the men gathered to come up with a design for the seal of Ohio they decided to leave off from their work and play cards all night.  There are clear differences in the two versions in just 38 years.  What would have been politically correct in  1943 “but postponed their work to enjoy a card game” was obviously not acceptable in 1981, so it was changed to “The discussion lasted all night.”  However, the true events are lost. When such a thing can happen to the monument of the seal of Ohio just think of all the other events that are lost. I think it is important that we inform our children that historical records apart from dates, names, and events should be taken with a grain of salt.  The more sources you use to get your story from the more accurate the information will be.

Workboxes or Fileboxes

August 7, 2009

pics 010

I learned about Workboxes from Homeschooling Adventure‘s Blog.  She has 2 children so she is doing the workboxes. However, I have 3 children so I thought it would be best to use the hanging file boxes for each child because of the space.

The idea of the workboxes or fileboxes is to let your child know what work they have to do for the day. It is all right in front of them so they can actually see their work disappearing as they accomplish each task.  It’s a wonderful idea and keeps the kids focused on what they need to do next.

Children’s Art Work Collage

August 3, 2009

derby 007

This is something fun to do with all those wonderful pieces of your child’s artwork you have stored away.

Pick and extra large frame such as a poster frame. Choose several of your favorite art pieces and arrange them in the frame until you find a pattern you like.

Once you find the design pattern you like use putty to keep them in place.

This is just another way of sharing your little Van Gough master pieces!

Cracked Wax Effect

February 1, 2009

tea-party-0031

This is a different resist technique using wax crayons. It works best if your picture covers the paper.

Cracks appear in the crayoned parts when you crumple up the paper. These allow the paint to seep through leaving a cracked effect.

1. Make sure you use thin paper such as typing paper.  Draw a flower in a pot with wax crayons.  Color them in, pressing hard.

2. Fill in the background with crayon. Press hard and leave no gaps.

3. Crumple the paper in from the corners. Be careful not to tear it.

4. Open out the paper. Crumple it again, so that you get lots of cracks.

5. Flatten your picture. Paint all over with dark poster paint or ready-mix.

6. Make sure that you have brushed paint into all the cracks.

7. Rinse both sides under running water. Let the water drip off. Let it dry.

8. If your picture is crinkly, iron it between two pieces of newspaper.

Glue Pictures – Antique Picture Frame

February 27, 2009

blog-014

This art project is easy for your kids to do and is something mom can treasure.

This idea uses household glue for drawing, which leaves a raised line when it dries. The raised lines are then covered with gold acrylic paint, and black shoe polish is rubbed in to get an “antique” look.

1. You will need household glue that has a nozzle top. If the glue is new, snip a little piece off the nozzle. Test it to see the thickness of the line it makes.

2. If the line you have drawn is very thin, snip a little bit more off the end of the nozzle.

3. Cut a picture frame (desired size) out of cardboard. Draw some decorative wavy lines and dots on the frame.

4. Then, draw around your picture, squeezing the glue out gently as you draw.

5. When you get to the end of a line, lift the glue up quickly, so that it doesn’t drip.

6. Leave it to dry overnight. Then, paint all over with gold acrylic paint. Let the paint dry.

7. To get an antique look put some black shoe polish on a soft cloth then rub it all over.

8. Put your favorite picture in for the finishing touch. If you would like get antique ribbon to put on the back of your picture to use as a decorative hanging device.

This project would be a great gift for grandparents.

Have fun and enjoy.

Teaching Chidren to be Thankful

April 30, 2009

thanking1

Speaking to yourselves in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord;
Giving thanks always for all things unto God and the Father in the name of our
Lord Jesus Christ;
Eph 5:19-20

A child learning to be thankful in everything is probably one of the most difficult things a child can learn, that goes for us parents too. However, the earlier we are taught to be thankful the more it is instilled in us to Thank God for everything no matter what.

Ephesians 5: 19-20, we read, “Always give thanks to God the Father for everything in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ.

Always and for everything giving thanks is a tough exercise for us all however, it is a command. It’s not to be ignored or complained about, just do it. How, you say. How can we possibly give thanks for all this? If you were to look into the Bible you could find out how to give thanks.

Job was a man who suffered most of anybody in the scripture that we know about, other than Jesus himself that is. Did Job have troubles? He was able to say, “The Lord gave and the Lord took away and blessed be the name of the Lord.”  It takes real strength to say that doesn’t it.

What about Paul and Silas when they were in the dungeon? Can you imagine how the air smelled, the walls and floor damp and cold and there they were beaten and bleeding probably lying on the cold floor. What were they doing, they were singing loud enough so that the prisoners heard. They were thanking God of everything.

One of my favorite people, Corrie ten Boom, tells when she was in the concentration camp and how she would jump to her feet and start singing at the top of her voice, “Stand Up, Stand Up for Jesus.” Can you imagine being able to muster up the strength to do that while in a concentration camp?  You could if you had been practicing it all your life, that is giving thanks no matter what. Again, Eph 5:19-20 says “Sing and make music in your heart to the Lord, always giving thanks to God the Father for everything in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ.”

Never mind if you happen to be feeling unhappy, you have the power to rejoice. This simple act of obedience can change the outlook of things. If you feel you can not do anything but cry, then praise the Lord through your tears. Thank Him for all the wonderful things you can think of that He has done. Obedience is acceptable to God especially when it done cheerfully.

If your children see you rejoicing in all things they too will learn to Praise God in all situations. Remember, Proverbs 22:6 Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it.

So, let’s train up a child to be obedient and thankful in all, no matter what.

Fish Birthday Cake

June 27, 2009

Isaiah 003

For my sons birthday he wanted a fish cake.  He said he wanted me to do it all on my own without looking on the internet to get ideas. Well, after standing in the candy isle for what seemed like forever trying to decide what would look most like the fins, this is what I came up with.

My tough little critic liked his fish cake!  Mission accomplished!
